Rosa Esteva was born in 1975 in the village of Son Servera, Mallorca, and both her mother and her beautiful table decorations instilled in her a love of art and nature. So, after studying Fine Arts and Fashion Design in Barcelona, she created the famous firm Cortana, using her grandmother's surname as the brand name.
The physical clothes shop is just a few steps from Puro Grand Hotel 5* on the same street (Calle Montenegro) as Puro hotel Oasis Urbano. Here, in addition to exclusive linen clothing and wedding dresses that highlight the craftsmanship of pattern making, you can now buy items from its home decoration collection, Cortana Casa, which uses materials and techniques from Mallorca: ceramics, blown glass, wooden trays, and linen.
Of late, Puro Grand Hotel has been exhibiting porcelain bowls by Cortana, part of its high-temperature ceramic tableware, made in Mallorca.
For Rosa, the family is of utmost importance. This is reflected in the new collection of interior decoration for the home that she has just launched. In it, she presents minimalist pieces inspired by local craftmanship from Mallorca, which aim to be practical in use and to create beauty and harmony in the lives of families, just as she experienced during her childhood and thanks to her mother's example, who taught her to turn her house into a home.
We sat down for a chat with this internationally renowned Mallorcan artist.
Q: Rosa, how did the interior design collection project come to fruition?
A: I wanted to develop the Cortana Casa collection for a long time because I wanted to express my creativity in a more intimate sphere, in which surrounding oneself with beauty directly influences people's moods and their experience when eating or enjoying their home.
"Within this new collection, ceramics have taken on special importance because they represent our connection to the earth and food. Since I was a child, I have learned to give these moments a significant space; eating and enjoying the company of family and friends is surely one of the most pleasurable experiences anyone can enjoy.
Q: How important are your roots in your work?
A: I think Mallorca is present in all my creations. Sometimes it can be obvious, and other times it can be subtle, but you will always find its colours, textures, the sea, the earth, and the aromas of the countryside in all that we do at Cortana.
I am delighted to be living here again and developing the Cortana Casa collection entirely in Mallorca, collaborating with local craftspeople and workshops all over the island. Thanks to this, we have discovered wonderful people with a deep knowledge of local materials and the most appropriate techniques to develop my designs. This collaboration has been highly enriching for me; I hope both the collection and artisans who help us develop my designs continue growing.
Q: What links Cortana's art with Puro Grand Hotel?
A: I admire initiatives that aim to recover our architectural heritage, which is of a restrained and powerful beauty. Puro Grand Hotel is a clear example of this.
This luxury hotel clearly reflects the recovery of the island's architectural and historical heritage. So much so that from the first moment the Group started the project, it clearly stated that the refurbishment would maintain the building's essence, enhance its historical character, and preserve the original architectural elements. During the refurbishment, a peculiar Mudéjar coffered ceiling was uncovered, which today forms part of one of the most exclusive suites, Suite Essence, an authentic jewel that turns this boutique hotel in Palma, replete with many other historical and architectural elements, into a unique Oasis.
